How Long Do Garage Door Springs Actually Last?

Springs are rated in cycles, not years, and the difference between those two things is why people are surprised when one breaks.

What a Cycle Is

One cycle is the door going up and coming back down. A standard torsion spring is built for roughly 10,000 of them.

The manufacturer cannot know how often you open your door, so the rating is in cycles and everything else is arithmetic you have to do yourself.

Do the Arithmetic

Four cycles a day is a fairly typical household. Out in the morning, back at lunch, out again, home in the evening. That is about 1,460 a year, so a 10,000 cycle spring lasts around seven years.

Eight cycles a day is normal where the garage is the main entrance, or with two cars coming and going. That halves it to about three and a half years.

Two cycles a day on a lightly used detached garage stretches it past thirteen.

So “how long do springs last” has no single answer. Count your own openings for a week and multiply.

What Shortens It

Salt air. Corrosion on a coil creates stress risers, and a spring breaks at its weakest point. Within a mile or two of the water in Long Beach, expect meaningfully less than the rating.

Never being lubricated. A dry spring grinds against itself as it winds. A light coat once a year genuinely extends life, and it is the easiest maintenance on the whole door.

Being undersized in the first place. A spring that is not matched to the door weight is working outside its design range on every cycle. This is common on doors where a previous repair used whatever was on the van.

An unbalanced pair. One new spring against one old one means the new one carries more than its share.

What Extends It

High-cycle springs, rated near 25,000 instead of 10,000. Heavier wire, more coils. Roughly two and a half times the life for well under twice the price, which makes them the cheaper choice on any busy door.

Correct sizing, which costs nothing extra if the person fitting them weighs the door.

Annual lubrication, which costs almost nothing.

Knowing Where You Are

You cannot see cycle life. But you can notice these:

The door feels heavier by hand. Pull the release cord and lift it. It should be liftable with one hand and should hold position at waist height. If it sinks, the springs have lost tension and are getting tired.

The opener strains or runs slower than it used to.

The door slams the last foot instead of settling.

Visible corrosion or pitting on the coils, particularly on the underside where you have to look up to see it.

The Failure Itself

When a torsion spring goes it is loud, often a bang like a gunshot, and it usually happens as the door is moving. Afterwards the door will lift a few inches and stop.

Look at the shaft above the opening. A failed spring has an obvious gap in the coil, one to three inches, as if a slice was cut out.

You can usually still get the car out. Pull the red release cord, then lift by hand. But with no counterbalance the door is as heavy as it actually is, so if it does not come up with reasonable effort, leave it. A door that gets away from someone comes down hard.

Replacing Before It Breaks

This is the argument for knowing your cycle count.

Replacing springs at seven years, on a scheduled visit, at a normal rate, with the car out of the garage, is a quiet morning. Replacing them after they break is an emergency call with the car trapped and whatever the schedule allows.

The parts cost is the same. Everything else about those two days is different.

And Please Do Not Do It Yourself

A wound torsion spring holds a large amount of stored energy even with the door down. It has to be unwound and rewound with proper winding bars, and the replacement has to be correctly sized.

There is plenty on a garage door a competent homeowner can handle. Rollers, hinges, weather seals, lubrication, testing the safety reversals. Springs are the exception, and the injury reports are consistent about it.

Extension Springs Are a Different Animal

Everything above describes torsion springs, the ones on a shaft above the opening. Older and lighter doors sometimes use extension springs instead, running horizontally alongside each track and stretching as the door comes down.

They are rated in cycles the same way and they wear the same way. What differs is the failure. A torsion spring that breaks stays on its shaft. An extension spring under tension that lets go can travel, which is why every extension spring should have a containment cable threaded through its centre.

If you have extension springs and no containment cables, that is worth fixing regardless of how much life the springs have left. The cable costs very little and it is the difference between a loud bang and something crossing the garage at speed.

What a Spring Job Should Include

Whoever replaces your springs should be doing more than swapping the part.

The door gets weighed, because that is what determines the spring size. Both springs are replaced, not one. The cables and drums are inspected while the tension is off, since that is the only sensible moment. The door is balance tested by hand afterwards, and it should hold position at waist height. And both opener safety reversals are tested before anyone leaves.

If a quote is notably cheaper than the others, it is worth asking which of those steps it includes. The spring itself is not usually where the difference is.

One Last Practical Note

If your springs are approaching their count and you are planning any other work on the door, get them done in the same visit. Rollers, cables, a bottom seal, an opener: all of it involves the same access and some of it involves releasing spring tension anyway.

Bundling the visit costs less than two separate ones, and it means the door leaves in a known condition rather than with one new part and several old ones.
